A Thought in the Spotlight: An African Student and Trump at Taganka

On that March evening, Moscow breathed dampness and melting snow. A low, leaden light hung over the Garden Ring, the wind from the Yauza River blew wet sleet across Taganskaya Square, and the few passersby walked hunched over, as if the city were once again learning to live its long history under the watchful eye of the sky. An Ethiopian student named Samuel, who had come to Russia to study political philosophy, stood in front of Taganka Theatre and I thought that some buildings were like human memory: from the outside they seemed solid, but inside they were made up of arguing voices.

He loved this place not for its legend, though it was great. Yuri Lyubimov had once worked here, and the stage, made famous by Vysotsky, knew the tone of the times better than many archives. Samuel came here not so much for the performances as to examine his own thoughts. In Moscow, he quickly realized: a person can speak freely, but think under orders; he can smile, yet inside he's already composing a self-denunciation.

That evening, an experimental production about power, language, and fear was being shown in the foyer. Spectators, journalists, security guards, and people in identical dark coats crowded the entrance. And among them, like a character cut out of an overly flamboyant newspaper and pasted into someone else's book, Donald Trump appeared. Not a living politician in the usual sense, but an almost theatrical figure: a heavy gait, a smug tilt of the head, the face of a man accustomed to speaking as if the world had already signed a contract with him. His arrival was explained as a cultural forum, an international discussion, whatever; Moscow knows how to accept the improbable with the same expression it accepts snow in April.

Samuel spotted him by chance near the mirrored wall. Trump was looking at the poster as if he wanted to negotiate with it. The poster read that a thought has no owner until it's named. This phrase probably delayed him longer than protocols do.

They found themselves next to each other in a buffet that smelled of coffee, wet wool, and old wood. Samuel, accustomed to spontaneous conversations in Moscow, wasn't surprised when Trump asked, with a slight chuckle, if he understood Russian theater. Samuel replied that theater didn't need to be understood if it spoke of fear: fear translates without words. Trump watched attentively, as they looked at his interlocutor, who was first mistaken for an extra, and then suspected of being the author.

The performance took place on a small stage. The actors spoke about a state that desires not obedience, but inner harmony; not submission, but the voluntary editing of the soul. Samuel listened and felt the air in the hall change. The people remained motionless. At such moments, a thought becomes almost audible, and that is especially terrifying: it has not yet been spoken, but it can already be condemned.

In the second act, the lights dimmed, and a single line flashed across the black backdrop: a person belongs to the one who gave a name to their doubt. Samuel suddenly recalled his grandfather's stories about Ethiopia during the upheavals, about portraits in institutions, about slogans that are first hung in the streets and then stuck inside people's heads. He realized that Moscow, with its Stalinist shadows, its alleys that outlived the censors, and Taganka, with its rebellious stage memory, had converged at this point for a reason. History always returns to where it was once dared to be spoken aloud.

When the curtain fell, Trump didn't applaud for several seconds. Then he clapped briefly, almost angrily. On his way out, he told Samuel: a thought is only dangerous when it infects others. Samuel quietly replied: no, it's dangerous earlier—when a person first allows themselves to think without permission. And there was more truth in this exchange than in the formal speeches that had likely been the whole evening's premise.

Outside, the snow was already turning to rain. The lights of the Taganka Theater blurred in the puddles, like old promises on wet paper. Trump drove away in a black car, surrounded by people whose job it was to prevent the unpredictable. Samuel was left alone in the wind and walked toward the Taganskaya metro station, keeping in mind a simple, almost unbearable thought: true power begins not where you are forbidden to speak, but where you are taught to fear your own thoughts. And if the theater can still remind you of this, then the city is not completely defeated.

*** Of course, this is fiction, though it does conceal a hidden meaning; it was created solely to touch your cultural and historical sensibilities. But if you're looking for true facts and events rather than mere shadows of conjecture, you should consider taking a tour with the Radius agency, where the past speaks without a mask.

  10. Anastasia, good morning!
Thank you and Masha for yesterday!
The speakers are happy. The connection in the headphones often failed, especially at the checkpoint, but this is our current life situation. It was audible if they were standing close, no further than 1.5 meters. Colleagues have already asked for your contacts. I will gladly share and will be glad to have a new opportunity to work with you. Special thanks to the Director for the Bureau

  14. Excursions with the travel agency "Radius" are always positive emotions for you, if you have chosen this agency. On your next visit, you planned an excursion to Zamoskvorechye. This is not the first time we have met with the guide Anton. We definitely recommend him to all our friends. The tour is educational, not overloaded with dates, the information is voluminous, but easy to perceive, because it is presented not like in a history textbook, dryly and academically, but in a light narrative manner. Thank you for this approach. We will contact the Radius bureau more than once on our next visit to Moscow.

  17. Studied together with relatives and Radius The soul of Moscow on my birthday. Everyone enjoyed the walk immensely! Anton told us many interesting facts about the capital and its history, led us into such spiritual depths that no one present suspected. Although among us there were mainly those who either from birth or have been living in Moscow for a very long time and walk around it a lot. It was educational, soulful and unforgettable 🙂

Overall, this wasn’t the first time I’ve walked around Moscow with Anton, and each time it was a real adventure!

Everything was just magical: a slight frost of -4, snow, numerous Christmas trees, decorations, lights, garlands and all this to the interesting educational story of Anastasia. Despite the fact that we knew something about the New Year, there was a lot that was new, unexpected and interesting. And all this to the music of Tchaikovsky. In general, we are delighted. 24. The excursion is unusual, unconventional, I really liked it. The involvement of a girl in the role of Nina from "The Seagull" harmoniously fit into the narrative. I recommend developing in this direction. "Apartment 44" came in handy exactly at the moment when it was most needed. My wife is very pleased with both the excursion and the painting.

Note: Review of the excursion-performance, which the guide Alexander specially developed as part of the order "Dream Tour".
