The excursion leaflet of the 1920s served as a practical guide for following a route independently. In the ‘Self-Education Excursions’ series, published by the Cultural and Educational Department of the Moscow Provincial Council of Trade Unions, each slim publication set out a subject for study and linked it to movement through a real place. It helped participants formulate a research question and gather observations with which to answer it.
