How Pushkin and a peasant shared wine in Moscow

Ladies and gentlemen, imagine Moscow in the mid-19th century, when there was no Wi-Fi, no coffee on every corner, and legs, as they say, were the main means of transportation. It was 1832, and the streets of Moscow were so cold that even street cats wore felt boots. And at that time, in one of the Moscow courtyards, where now stands VKHUTEMAS, a funny story happened.

Imagine: young Alexander Pushkin, who is known to everyone as a great poet, was out of his element that day. He had just published another volume of his poems and decided to celebrate the event. But instead of going to his usual coffee shop, Pushkin decided to have a picnic right in the courtyard, taking a couple of bottles of wine with him.

And here our serf peasant, Ivan, comes on stage, who was sent to Moscow by his master on an errand, and who decided to take a look at the capital's life at the same time. Ivan, who had never seen so much wine in his life, accidentally stumbled upon Pushkin and, not recognizing him, offered his help in drinking the bottles.

Pushkin, being in a good mood, agreed. And so they sat together on the cold Moscow ground, with snowflakes swirling around them. Ivan, not used to such liberties, decided that drinking with the gentleman himself was nothing more than a sign of fate. So he began to tell Pushkin about his difficult life in the village, about how his legs ached from constant work, and how he dreamed of drinking good wine at least once in his life.

But then the unexpected happened: Ivan, inspired by the poet's speeches and the abundance of alcohol, decided that he, too, was a poet. He jumped to his feet and began to pontificate about love, nature and potatoes, trying to impress Pushkin. However, his "verses" turned out to be so absurd that even the snowflakes stopped falling from laughter. Pushkin, rolling with laughter, said: "Ivan, you're a damn genius!"

And so, embracing, they spent the entire evening, forgetting that it was winter outside and their feet had long since stopped feeling anything from the cold. Ivan finally understood that wine is not only about taste, but also about mood, and Pushkin may have found inspiration for new lines.
