The Narkomfin Building: What Was Shared and What Remained Private
The Narkomfin Building provided residents with separate flats, private sanitary facilities and the option of cooking at home. The designers described the complex as a transitional-type building: the dining hall, laundry, physical exercise and some childcare were moved into communal blocks, while private and family life was preserved. The label ‘communal house’ therefore misrepresents how the building was organised.
