They meet in a hall with carved oak panels, where Chaliapin's voice once resounded. Peter, as always imperious and decisive, tells his story of how one of his decisions influenced the fate of an unfortunate merchant who was unjustly accused and exiled from the city.
The ghost, despite his gloomy appearance, turns out to be kindhearted and empathetic. He agrees to help Peter right the wrongs of the past. Together, they embark on a journey through time to find the merchant's descendants and restore his good name.
