Moscow, 1920s. The city, as always, is bustling with life, and at this time Mikhail Bulgakov strolling along Patriarch's Ponds, thinking about a new play. Suddenly, his attention is drawn to a woman who, apparently, is lost. She is dressed in an elegant coat and hat, as if she came from the cover of a fashion magazine. Bulgakov, like a true gentleman, decided to offer his help.
"What the hell, I come here every day and this lady is clearly out of her element!" he muttered under his breath as he walked towards her.
It turned out that the woman was a foreigner and had poor orientation in Moscow. She asked how to get to the Bolshoi Theatre. Bulgakov, without losing his composure, offered to take her there and even told her several interesting stories about the city and its sights.
As they walked, the conversation turned to literature and theatre. The woman turned out to be a great admirer of Chekhov, and Bulgakov could not resist:
"Chekhov was good, but his 'Cherry Orchard' is complete nonsense!" he blurted out, clearly regretting what he had said when he saw the woman frown.
“Okay, don’t get all worked up, I just have my own scores to settle with him,” Mikhail tried to justify himself.
When they reached the theatre, the woman thanked Bulgakov and, smiling, said: “You may not be Chekhov, but your company was very informative.” It was a pleasant end to their spontaneous excursion.
Bulgakov, returning back, thought: “I wonder what she would say about my ‘Master and Margarita’? We’ll have to meet again sometime…”
At this point his thoughts were interrupted by a downpour that descended on the city. "Oh, shit!" he cursed, hiding under the visor of a nearby building.
As always, Moscow remained true to itself - unpredictable and full of surprises, like its inhabitants. And Bulgakov understood that even in such a field as literature, not everything is so clear-cut and you can meet many interesting people.
