In Moscow, on Arbat, in the gloomy November of pre-revolutionary 1898, Anton Chekhov, already a recognized master of the pen, found himself in the Pushkin Memorial Apartment. The wind whispered sad songs, and the rain, like bitter tears, knocked on the windows. Chekhov, sheltered from the bad weather, sought inspiration among the ancient walls, where the voice of Alexander Sergeyevich himself once sounded.
Unexpectedly for himself, Anton met here the young Nicholas II, who, as it turned out, decided to visit the apartment of the great poet in search of answers to his own questions. The majestic emperor looked like an ordinary man who had temporarily forgotten about his royal duties. They began to talk, and Nicholas, tired of the burden of power, shared his innermost secrets with Chekhov.
"You know, Anton Pavlovich," Nikolai began, "I've been wondering if I should go to a monastery? This power, these endless worries... Maybe the silence of a cell is what I'm looking for?"
Chekhov, a keen observer of human souls, smiled and replied: "Your Majesty, pre-revolutionary Moscow will not forgive you for such a choice. But perhaps love... for literature? It can also become a monastery where one can go to forget about everything else."
Nikolai thought about it. Love… Yes, it could be his salvation. But not for literature, but for his people, for his country. He thanked Chekhov and left the apartment, taking with him not only words, but also new hope.
Anton remained in the silence of the empty rooms, thinking about how strangely the destinies of people in this world intersect, and how love, in its most varied manifestations, can change the entire course of history.
And when Chekhov went out onto the Arbat, the rain no longer seemed so cold, and the wind - so ominous. It was an ordinary Moscow evening, in which great secrets and simple truths were hidden.
